Australian transit card 'improves' transport
13 Jul 2010

Public transport in Australia has benefited from the introduction of a transit card scheme, it has been claimed.

Queensland adopted the Go Card system in 2008 which allows passengers to travel across the city's transport network without the need for cash.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said travel on public transport had improved following the implementation of Go Cards.

She told queenslandtimes.com: "It means that our buses and trains can load people and unload them more quickly and everybody can get where they need to go as quickly and on time as possible."

Cardholders can travel for reduced rates, with many fares up to 30 per cent cheaper than paper tickets.

Regular commuters are also rewarded for repeat travel as those who use the card more than ten times in a week receive a 50 per cent discount.

The Queensland government is currently giving away free Go Cards loaded with credit to encourage more people to use the technology.
