Australian transit card scheme continues to grow
11 Aug 2010
An Australian transit card scheme has become increasingly popular over the past year, it has been revealed.
Queensland's state government has found that 60 per cent of all trips this year were paid for using the Go card, compared to 33 per cent in 2009.
Furthermore, 23.6 million journeys were paid for using the technology between January and March 2010 - over double the amount for the same period last year.
Matt Cole, the managing director of Go card developers Cubic Transportation Systems, claimed the local government and transport agency should be praised for the scheme's success.
He said: "The Brisbane Go card system is a great example of a modern integrated ticketing system. TransLink is already starting to see the benefits of shorter boarding times and better data on transport usage patterns."
The system was deployed across the region's transport network in 2008, allowing users to pay for travel on Translink's buses, ferries and trains without the need for cash.
