Australian transit card scheme set to go live
26 Jul 2010
An Australian transit card scheme is set to be rolled out across Melbourne this Sunday (25th July).
The $1.35 billion (£782 million) Myki card programme will replace the existing Metcard system which will be gradually phased over the next year.
Residents will be able to use the contactless smart card on the city's trams, buses and regional rail services.
Users could benefit from faster transactions as the cards simply have to be swiped over the contactless reader and queuing times could also be reduced.
Mr Pakula, public transport minister, confirmed present cardholders would be able to use their card on all modes of city transport.
He told theage.com.au: "If you are already using myki on trains you will be able to use the same card to get around on Melbourne's trams and buses."
The scheme was initially trialled on buses in six towns in 2008, before it was expanded onto Melbourne's train network in late 2009.
