Australian transport officials urged to deploy contactless transit cards
8 Nov 2010
Australian transport officials have been urged to incorporate contactless technology into their various transit card projects.
There are currently a number of smart-card based systems either in their trial phase or development stages, with some, such as the Myki card programme in Melbourne, encountering technical difficulties.
Chris Clark, general manager for Visa's Australia and New Zealand, claimed contactless technology is ideal for public transport services.
He told audience members at the Financial Services Technology Media conference: "New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Auckland in New Zealand are all at various stages of implementing smart card ticketing systems at the moment and contactless payment technology, in our view, must ultimately be included in the long term eventual roll-out of these systems for the benefit of domestic consumers," reports zdnet.co.uk.
Visa is currently trialling its contactless payment technology on the New York subway system which will enable mobile phone users to pay for their fare without the need for cash.
