Azerbaijan set to launch new transit card scheme
22 Nov 2010
A new transit card programme is set to be launched in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, according to reports.
National news agency APA has revealed that the country's transport ministry will introduce a single card which can be used on the city's bus, metro and taxi services.
Sadraddin Mammadov, head of the transport ministry's transport policy department, told the news provider that the design and format of the cards have already been chosen.
Users will be able to seamlessly travel across the city on various forms of transport by simply swiping their cards on the provided readers fitted inside public transport vehicles.
Cardholders can top up their account at designated payment terminals installed in bus and railway stations, as well as airports.
The programme is expected to be fully operational following the installation of a new traffic control system in the capital early next year.
