Bidders for Toronto's transit card system unveiled
16 Sep 2010

The bidders for the new open fare transit card system in Toronto have been released by the city's transport authority.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has confirmed that 11 firms have bid for the contract, reports theglobeandmail.com

Visa Canada is the only financial institution which has made an offer, while South Korean electronics giant LG and a subsidiary of Xerox also hope to operate the system.

Global smart card operator Cubic Transportation Systems is among the front-runners for the deal as they currently operate the Oyster card system in London.

The firm is also set to run a transit card service in Sydney after it secured the contract earlier this year.

TTC chair Adam Giambrone claimed the upcoming elections would not result in the current board aiming to finalise a contract before the new council takes power.

"Yes, there are elections, but people want us to get on with choosing an electronic payment," he told the star.com.
