Birmingham transit card scheme to go live next year
15 Jul 2010
A new transit card scheme in Birmingham could be fully operational by next year, it has been claimed.
Councillor Angus Adams, head of Birmingham travel authority Centro, has reassured residents that the programme will still go ahead despite public spending cuts, reports birminghammail.net.
The £20 million contactless smart card system will enable passengers to pay for travel on the city's buses, trains and trams without the need for cash.
Mr Adams claimed cardholders could end up saving a significant amount on travel as the technology will calculate the best value ticket.
He told the news provider: "This is a huge leap forward and something we are very excited about. It will automatically find people the cheapest fare and mean they don't have to stop to buy tickets."
Selected buses in Birmingham are currently trialling the scheme for concessionary passengers.
The scheme could be rolled out to other areas of the country if it proves to be a success, Mr Adams added.
