Bolton MP discusses smart travel cards at Labour conference
3 Oct 2011
Bolton West MP Julie Hilling discussed the possibility of introducing a smart travel card system to the north-west town at the recent Labour Party conference.
The Bolton News reports that the politician expressed the need for a multi-use contactless smart card - similar to London's Oyster card system - which can be used on both bus and rail networks to help improve public transport in the area.
She suggested the introduction of such a method would help to ease overcrowding for commuters on the journey from Bolton to central Manchester.
Additionally, Ms Hilling discussed the need for an increase in popular bus and rail routes.
She said: "Under the current transport system, companies run the profitable routes and it is the taxpayer who takes the risk.”
Labour's annual party conference saw some 11,000 delegates and visitors travel to Liverpool from September 26th to 29th to network, share new political ideas and "shape Labour's vision for Britain".
