Brighton buses launching contactless smart cards
28 Mar 2011

New contactless smart cards are to be introduced for those using public transport in the south of England.

The entire Brighton and Hove Bus Company fleet has been equipped with machines to read the pieces of plastic, the local Argus newspaper reports.

It is hoped the system will be up and running within two months, as special chips still need to be fitted to the devices.

The scheme has cost £750,000, but it looks set to improve the way passengers pay for their tickets, as well as speeding up their journeys.

Brighton and Hove Buses managing director Roger French said: "By this time next year we will have everything done and it will be a common way of paying for bus travel."

He described it as being a "very exciting future".

This comes after Brighton and Hove Albion announced it is to introduce a new loyalty scheme for fans who want to obtain tickets for more in-demand football matches.
