Brighton considers contactless smart card system
13 Oct 2009
Bus travel in Brighton could soon be paid for using contactless smart cards that are similar to London's Oyster card, it has emerged.
The Argus reports that an investigation has been launched by transport chiefs to see how such a system would work in the city.
Developments in this field could see people top up cards that are then placed in front of a scanning machine to gain access to transport.
In London, thousands of people commute in and around the city every day using Oyster cards, cutting down ticket office queues and generally making the travelling process more efficient.
New chairman and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York Jay Walder is planning to implement a similar system in the Big Apple to bring the city's public transport up to date.
He announced the plans recently, having taken on his new position at the MTA in September.
