Brussels chooses contactless smart card provider
4 Sep 2009

People of Brussels will soon be able to use contactless smart cards to travel on the subway, buses and trams in the city.

On Wednesday September 2nd, it was announced that the Societe des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB) has chosen digital security solutions provider Gemalto for the Belgian capital's smart card travel scheme.

Etienne Graindor, general secretary of the ticketing department at STIB, said that Gemalto was selected due to its experience in "large-scale deployments of contactless transport cards".

"We wanted to provide our customers with a reliable and sustainable product that they can use on a daily basis during five years," he added, before claiming Gemalto meets these requirements.

It is hoped that the use of contactless smart cards will make travel arrangements in Brussels faster and more convenient.

Back in the UK, eMoney network sQuidcard, winner of the Gemalto 2008 award for Best Innovation, will soon be introducing a new system in Bolton, which will allow residents of the Greater Manchester town to pay for bus travel with contactless smart cards.
