Bus passengers enjoy swipe card system
7 Dec 2011

Bus passengers in Keighley seem to be enjoying using a new system which sees them swipe a contactless smart card in order to pay their fare.

The initiative has been brought in as a trial, but it may be rolled out all over Yorkshire if it proves successful, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reports.

Metro, the transport authority responsible, said people are really taking to the smart cards rather than using cash on Transdev vehicles.

Spokesperson Geoff Lomax explained that residents are eager to try out the contactless smart cards after seeing them advertised and hearing about them from friends.

It is hoped the punctuality of buses will be improved in the local area because passengers do not need to hold the vehicle up for as long while they pay their fare.

Earlier in 2011, the Competition Commission said an Oyster Card-like scheme for buses could help to encourage people to use the vehicles more for commuting and pleasure.
