Calls made for more Oyster card readers at London Underground stations
11 Mar 2011
Calls have been made for more check-in machines to be installed at tube stations without barriers across London, to ensure that people paying with Oyster contactless smart cards can properly touch in and out.
According to the Epping Forest Guardian, commuters can often find it difficult to locate the machines to swipe their travel cards at some stations.
If you do not properly touch in and out, London Underground's systems will assume your journey is incomplete and charge you the maximum fare.
Transport for London estimates that some 3.6 million people are over-charged for not properly touching in and out every year.
However, a spokesperson for the tube operator told the newspaper: "Maximum fares are not overcharges. We have maximum fares in place to ensure customers validate their journeys or we would open to widespread fare evasion across our network."
She added that the number of journeys recorded as incomplete is falling and currently stands at less than two per cent.
