Cambridge councillor confident on new smart card scheme
8 Sep 2009

A Cambridgeshire councillor has spoken of the county's plans to introduce a new contactless smart card scheme for bus travel.

Roy Pegram, cabinet member for growth at Cambridgeshire county council, said that this smart card ticketing system - which will be available to use on Stagecoach and Whippet buses – is "going to take time to develop".

Commenting to the Cambridge News, he said: "A smart card-type ticket, which will be accepted by both bus operators, is being developed for the busway, which will be the first of its kind in the country."

He added that the council wants to test the eMoney facility prior to its launch as they want to get the system to work correctly.

Mr Pegram's comments follow a number of complaints about the current bus travel set-up in the county, which involves passengers buying tickets that can only be used on one bus service or the other. There is currently no crossover.

Meanwhile, eCash network sQuidcard recently established a contactless smart card that the people of Bolton, Greater Manchester can use for bus travel in the area.
