Canadian city set to launch new transit card programme
27 Oct 2010

A new Canadian transit card programme is due to be launched in the city of Regina next month.

The Regina Transit authority has announced that the R-Card scheme will go live on the city's buses from November 1st.

Residents will be able to pay for bus travel by simply swiping their cards on the provided readers, while cash will also be accepted on the services.

"With the new R-Card, it's another convenient way in which citizens are able to access our transit system," Mayor Pat Fiacco told the Regina Leader-Post.

"Transit is very much a service that you need to provide good customer service if you expect customers to keep using [it]."

Local transport officials also confirmed that more functions could be added to the card in the future to allow users to pay for goods at local retailers.

The $3.5 million (£2.16 million) R-Card project was funded through the government's Public Transit Capital Trust Fund programme.
