Canadian transit card scheme could be expanded
22 Jul 2010
A Canadian transit card scheme could be expanded throughout Toronto, it has been claimed.
Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi has pledged to deploy the Presto cards throughout the city's transport network if he is elected.
The contactless smart cards are currently used on buses and trains in selected regions in Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa.
Users simply tap their cards on the provided readers to pay for journeys quickly and easily.
"I am committing today to bringing Toronto into the 21st century by adopting the regional Presto card system," Mr Rossi said.
"If I am elected mayor, I will fast track the adoption of the smart card throughout the TTC as part of making customer service a top priority in this city."
Mr Rossi estimates the introduction of the more efficient programme could lead to potential savings of up to $100 million (£63 million) per year.
The regional transit authority could save money on staff as the card scheme would eliminate the need for ticket collectors.
