Canberra commuters to benefit from wide rollout of hit transit card system
8 Mar 2011

Commuters living in Canberra are to benefit from a planned extension to the city's smart card public transport payment system.

From the start of next week, all of the city's residents will be able to make use of the recently-launched MyWay smart card ticketing system after a trial run - in which just the over-65s in the capital were given the technology - proved to be a major success.

Announcing the news, Canberra's minister for transport Jon Stanhope explained that the past two weeks alone saw around 4,500 seniors make use of the technology, with officials seeing this as a sign that it is time to push on with the scheme and make the cards available to everyone.

Commenting on the benefits, he explained: "The requirement for people to tag on and off buses will not only provide important information on travel patterns but also ensure customers are charged the cheapest available fare, for instance journeys taken during off-peak periods will automatically be charged at off-peak rates."

This comes as the government of the state of Victoria looks into replacing its own Myki transit card system.
