Cashless system 'makes travel easier for Maryland passengers'
10 Dec 2009
An alternative payment method to cash will offer a "more convenient" travel experience to those who use Maryland's Metro Subway, it has been suggested.
Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Administrator Ralign Wells said that his organisation is looking to provide such a service to its riders.
His comments come as the MTA announced that vending machines in the Subway will now accept credit cards.
Plans had been in place to introduce a contactless smart card system, but this set-up is now set to be implemented by autumn next year.
"Credit card acceptance reflects our commitment to customer service," explained Mr Wells.
Commuters and other public transport users in Maryland will see ticket vending machines at Light Rail stops gradually start utilising the credit card payment facility over the next 90 days.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority Jay Walder is planning to establish a smart card payment system in the Big Apple in the coming months.
