Cashless toll use continues to rise in San Francisco
21 Sep 2010

The number of San Francisco motorists using eMoney solutions to pay for toll charges has nearly doubled in four years, according to new statistics.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has revealed that 77 percent of morning drivers now use FasTrak technology to pay for the toll on the Bay Bridge, compared to 36 per cent in 2006.

Evening motorists are also increasingly using FasTrak as 68.8 per cent now use it, compared to 44.6 per cent four years ago, reports sfexaminer.com.

Overall, 68.6 per cent of residents who drive along the city's seven bridges are now using FasTrak.

The system uses an in-car transponder to communicate with roadside antennas and automatically deducts the required fee from a users' account when they pass through toll zones.

"We've seen a steady climb in our FasTrak usage, which is very encouraging," MTC spokesman John Goodwin told the news provider.

The MTC also found that the maximum delay for drivers crossing the Bay Bridge has decreased by an average of nine minutes in the past 12 months.
