Cashless transit cards rolled out in South Africa
25 Jul 2012

Following a trial period, a new smartcard is to be rolled out in Ethekwini, South Africa.

People using the Durban Transport and People Mover buses will now use transit cashless cards instead of cash.

The Muvo card uses contactless technology to provide tap-to-pay services, much like an Oyster card.

Powered by Standard Bank Beyond Payments unit in association with the Nation Department of Transport (NDoT) the transit card is an anonymous debit MasterCard which can be recharged and refunded.

Beyond Payments’ business development manager Mike Hughes, said “The card also allows for employers and parents to load their employees and children's cards remotely. In addition, the light Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) limits mean that, even though the cards are anonymous, there are solutions in place to replace cards in the event of theft or loss.”
Over 50,000 cards will be distributed to users, free of charge, over the next two months.
