Commuter fares for travel to London hit £10k a year
16 Jun 2011

The cost for some people using transit systems to commute into London is set to reach £10,000 a year, transport experts have warned.

According to the Campaign for Better Transport, the government's decision to relax the cap on fare hikes could lead to a rise of almost £2,000 in annual season rail tickets by 2015, reports the Evening Standard.

Within the next four years, commuters using transit systems to come in from Swindon could see their annual fare increase to £9,016, up from the £7,024 they currently pay.

This cost excludes the £592-a-year fare for travel on the London Underground, which, in some cases, could be paid for using contactless payment methods.

"With the cost of using the Underground, the cost of travelling into London to work is set to break through the eye-watering £10,000 mark," reportedly warned shadow transport secretary Maria Eagle.

London Underground strike talks broke down yesterday (June 15th), meaning walkouts are still due to take place between June 19th and 20th, the 27th and 28th and the 29th and 30th.
