Competition Commission calls for Oyster Card-like scheme on buses
10 Oct 2011
The Competition Commission has said that an Oyster Card-like scheme for buses that applies for all services could help to encourage people to use the vehicles more for commuting and pleasure.
It criticised the current level of rivalry in the regional bus market and said tickets valid across all operators - perhaps using contactless smart cards - could be beneficial for passengers, the Financial Times reports.
Chairman of an investigation into the matter Jeremy Peat suggested that all operators should also be able to access all stations, rather than some companies having a monopoly on certain stops.
Campaign for Better Transport spokesperson Sophie Allain commented that although any recommendations are welcome, budgets in the public transport sector mean it remains to be seen whether they will be adopted.
Back in July, travellers using transit systems in Scotland called for their own version of London's Oyster Card in order to ease congestion.
