Contactless smart card for Florida travel
27 Oct 2009
Travellers in Miami Dade County, Florida have been able to benefit from faster payments on buses and trains thanks to the implementation of a cashless payment system.
Completed just 15 months from the announcement of the contract, contactless payment was introduced on close to 900 buses and in 22 Metrorail stations to replace the original fare system that had been in place for a quarter of a century.
The cashless payment technology - which has been proven in other areas around the world - helps to reduce fare evasion, allows public transport to run more efficiently and gives passengers the convenience of not having to carry loose change, according to the travel company.
"We're confident our customers will be thrilled with the convenience the Easy Card offers," said director of Miami Dade Transit Harpal Kapoor.
The system has also been introduced in parking management centres in the district.
A smart card scheme is set to be trialled on buses and rail networks in the Midlands in 2010. Areas such as Kidderminster, Droitwich, Bromsgrove, Barnt Green and Worcester will be piloting the project, according to the Birmingham Mail.
