Contactless smart card for New York transit
24 Sep 2009
The MetroCard in New York is set to be replaced by contactless smart card technology, it has emerged.
Plans have been made to launch a system in the Big Apple that is similar to the Oyster card format in London, reports AM New York.
It comes in the same month that former London transport chief Jay Walder was announced as chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York.
Commenting on the prospective switchover, Executive Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA William Henderson said: "They've been pretty leisurely about doing this."
Apparently there has been criticism about the speed in which the MTA has acted in regard to the contactless smart card roll-out.
In addition to Oyster cards in London, the UK has a number of examples of similar technology being used across the country.
