Contactless smart card system for Manchester gathers momentum
2 Mar 2010

The move towards the implementation of a contactless smart card system for public transport in the city of Manchester has been seen to gather momentum, according to reports.

Computing.co.uk states that the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) has revealed that it is now in the process of finding an ePayments provider to offer the technology services behind the planned wave and pay scheme.

The implementation of a contactless smart card scheme will mean that residents travelling on buses and trains within Greater Manchester will be able to pay for their fares by swiping a pre-loaded transit card under a reader as they board GMPTE services.

And transport executives advise that the system could be extended to parking and cycle schemes in the city.

Residents of Bolton, Greater Manchester are already enjoying the benefits associated with contactless smart card technology - they can currently pay for all journeys on Arriva buses in the town with transit cards from ePayments provider sQuid.
