Contactless smart card system in north-east
28 Aug 2009
North-east England Metro operator Nexus has been given money to make changes to its payment systems.
It comes soon after the government announced proposals to introduce contactless smart card technology to transport systems across the UK in order to reduce queue times, increase accessibility and generally update the current network.
The Department for Transport has given Nexus over £13 million to upgrade ticket machines, while security gates will be installed at major transport hubs to prevent ticket dodging.
Electric barriers will be placed at Newcastle Airport, the city's Central Station and various other busy hubs in the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, eCash network sQuidcard will soon be introducing a new system in Bolton, which will allow residents of the Greater Manchester town to pay for bus travel with contactless smart cards.
