Contactless smart card travel 'the only way in Rotterdam'
15 Feb 2010

As of yesterday (February 11th), passengers on all forms of public transport in Rotterdam, Holland can only pay for their journeys using contactless smart card technology.

Paper tickets have been totally eradicated on all metro services in the city for the past year and now those travelling on buses and trams will also only be able to pay using a transit card, Dutch News reports.

This means that all people using the city's public transport system will be able to utilise the swipe and go technology to check in and out on bus, metro and tram routes.

If the system proves a success then it is set to be rolled out in Amsterdam in the coming year.

Hundreds of extra staff have been brought in to man transport services in the city so that travellers and commuters are able to get used to the contactless smart card systems.

Back in the UK, people travelling on Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester can pay for their journeys using transit cards from sQuid.
