Contactless smart cards for airports?
16 Mar 2010
Contactless smart cards are already transforming the catering and transport sectors, and could help alleviate queues at airports.
That is according to one commentator, who believes that smart card technology could be used to reduce queuing at Bahrain International Airport, much in the same way as it has been deployed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As well as this, smart cards could also be used to pay for tickets and food using eMoney while at airports.
In a letter to the Gulf Daily News, the commentator, identified as Harry, said: "Perhaps the powers-that-be need to ask their UAE friends how to go about setting up this system so that it works in an efficient manner.
"This would not only ease the burden on busy officials, but smooth the path for those who regularly enter the country."
The beneficial impact that smart cards can have on transport systems is clearly seen in London, where Oyster has completely revolutionised the way that people pay for London Underground services.
In Bolton, sQuid's GMPTE contactless smart card can be used for pay-as-you-go transactions on all Arriva buses, as well as for retail payments.
