Contactless smart cards in NY 'will help transport system'
28 Sep 2009
New York public transport users and the bus and subway systems as a whole will benefit from contactless smart card technology, it has been suggested.
Bill Henderson, Executive Director at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) Permanent Citizens Advisory Council, said that the introduction of the systems in the coming years is "great news".
He was commenting to the New York Daily News after the MTA announced that it hopes the current MetroCard system in the Big Apple will be fully replaced by the new set-up by 2014.
According to the newspaper, this is the first time that the authority has set a target date for the contactless equipment to be implemented.
Earlier this month, the MTA announced the man behind London's Oyster card as its new chairman and chief executive officer. Jay Walder's arrival has helped push on developments concerning transit system payment methods in New York.
It is not only Londoners who benefit from contactless payment on transport in the UK.
Thanks to eCash network sQuidcard, the people of Bolton, Greater Manchester are able to pay for bus travel using contactless smart cards.
