Contactless smart cards launched on Reading buses
8 Apr 2010
Reading's bus transit network has adopted the use of contactless smart card technology.
Launched yesterday, passengers will now be able to purchase the smart cards to pay for single, daily or weekly rides, according to the Reading Chronicle.
The local news provider notes that card holders will be able to top up their cards online or at one of 200 PayPoint stations in and around Reading and Newbury.
Reading's bus transit network is not the first in the country to have embraced technological developments to provide its users with a more convenient, quicker and easier way to pay their fares.
Bus passengers in Bolton have been able to use the technology for some time thanks to sQuid, the ePayment provider.
Similarly, a contactless smart card is provided which can be topped up with money online or at specified pay points.
sQuidcard, though, can offer users other benefits.
In parts of the country, people are able to use sQuidcards to make low value contactless payment for goods in participating retail outlets, while the organisation also facilitates cashless catering solutions in some schools.
