Contactless smart cards planned for Bedford
10 Jul 2009

Bedford transit systems are to benefit from the use of contactless smart cards, it has been revealed.

Luton Today reports Bedford mayor Frank Branston's plans to allow contactless smart cards similar to London's Oyster card to be used in the borough.

"We want to pull public transport in Bedford into the 21st century," the mayor tells the publication.

The planned introduction of contactless smart cards marks the second stage in a three-phase overhaul of the borough's transit systems.

Prior to the transit cards' introduction, the borough is seeking funding to allow it to extend the hours of operation of its bus services.

Following the launch of the transit cards, meanwhile, it is hoped that more information will be available about timetables - both online and on a new website.

Like the Oyster card in London, the sQuidcard is a contactless smart card being rolled out in locations nationwide for cashless cateringeMoney and on transit systems, with Bolton among the places due to adopt sQuid for transit cards in the coming months.
