Contactless smart cards 'to be implemented in Auckland'
19 Jan 2010

A contactless smart card ticketing system could come into force in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, it has been revealed.

The move will allow all public transport users in the city to use contactless technology to pay for journeys by swiping a transit card under a reader, with their fare automatically being deducted.

"Seamless movement between trains, buses and ferries using a smartcard ticket will make public transport much more attractive for Aucklanders," says Auckland Regional Council Chairman Mike Lee.

The system will be the first of its kind for New Zealand.

Mr Lee adds that smart cards are fundamental to Auckland's "public transport jigsaw" and the move will help transit systems in the area to move forward by embracing new technology.

Transit cards from sQuid can help people travelling on Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester, pay for their tickets without the need for cash. Taxi payments are set to follow later in the year.
