Contactless smart cards to be trialled in Vietnam
15 Jan 2010

Contactless smart cards are set to be trialled on certain transit systems in the Vietnamese capital Ho Chi Minh City, it has been reported.

Saigon Giai Phong stated that the transit card program will be initiated by the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Operation and Management Centre on the Saigon-Bin Tay and Ben Thanh-Au Co-An Suong bus routes from March 1st onwards.

Passengers can purchase either a yearly or monthly pass, with there being no limit to how many times those travelling on the buses can use the card.

Additionally, public transport users can top up the devices as and when they need to, with contactless smart card readers on the buses automatically subtracting funds from the cardholder's account each time they make a journey.

Contactless smart card systems are proving to be popular worldwide with projects in place in many countries, including Australia, America and Canada.

Transit cards from sQuid can help people travelling on Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester, pay for their tickets without the need for cash. Taxi payments are set to follow later in the year.
