Contactless smart cards used for new Italian cycle hire scheme
20 Aug 2010

A new cycle hire scheme has been launched in Italy which uses contactless smart cards.

Smart card operator LEGIC has formed a partnership with Italian firm Comunicare Group to allow local residents to hire bikes across the country with its Bicincitta programme.

Users simply register their details online and can then access the bikes at any time of day with their contactless LEGIC card.

All of the bicycles used in the scheme are tracked by a system which allows customers to see the availability of bikes in the area.

Furthermore, as LEGIC cards use open technology, more applications can be loaded onto them, while the new service can also be transferred onto existing smart cards.

Current travel cards or student cards can therefore be modified to include the Bicincitta programme.

LEGIC is also set to launch the scheme across Switzerland in cities such as Lausanne, Vevey, Yverdon and Fribourg.
