Delhi commuters to benefit from automatic transit card top-ups
16 Jan 2012
Delhi residents will soon be able to top-up their transit card for the city's metro network automatically following the introduction of new gates.
A spokesperson for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has revealed that the transport agency is set to begin rolling out AFC (Automatic Fare Collection) gates at stations to ensure passengers never run out of credit on their account.
When passing through these gates, the system will recognise if the smart card holder is low on credit and will automatically top-up their account if it falls below a pre-defined minimum amount.
It is hoped the move will reduce cash transactions at ticket counters and help commuters avoid long queues at the ticket machines.
“The DMRC is currently working on the finalisation of the technologies which will be used for this facility. It is expected that this facility will be made available to the commuters in another seven to eight months," the DMRC spokesperson said.
Around 12,000 of the smart cards are sold each day from Metro stations, with users eligible for a ten per cent discount on fares.
