Dublin transit system gets new smart card scheme
21 Dec 2011
Passengers using Dublin's public transport system are to benefit from a new system that uses contactless smart cards instead of paper tickets.
The National Transport Authority and minister for public and commuter transport Alan Kelly unveiled the Leap initiative earlier this week, which will apply to buses, trains and the DART network.
Rather than paying with change, travellers can top up their cards at designated points or online, then swipe them when they board a bus or train to pay their fare.
Mr Kelly told the Epoch Times Leap will gradually be built upon throughout 2012 to add new functions and discounts to it.
"The Leap card will be among the cheapest ways to get around Dublin. It will make using public transport more attractive and make it easier to get around the city," he added.
A similar system was recently rolled out in Keighley that allows bus passengers to also pay for their journeys using contactless smart cards, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reported.
