Easy Card transit system launched in Florida
18 Jan 2011

Transit cards for Florida's public transport system are to be launched today, allowing passengers to pay for their travel using contactless smart cards.

People travelling on Tri-Rail from January 17th onwards will be able to take advantage of the Easy Cards, which can be loaded with cash or monthly passes.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the cards can also be registered if they are lost or stolen, making it easier for passengers to protect their balance. A new card can be purchased for $2.

This is the first time that Tri-Rail's ticket machines have been updated since the commuter service launched in 1989.

Bonnie Arnold, a spokeswoman for the transport company, told the newspaper: "It's gotten to the point where we can't get parts for the old machines any more. The Easy Card is going to make passengers' lives so much better."

The cards have been developed by San Diego-based firm Cubic Transportation Systems. It will cost $14.8 million to install the system across the network.
