Edinburgh transit cards 'proving popular'
10 Jul 2009

Some 9,000 Edinburgh Passes - smart transit cards which allow entry to the city's tourist attractions - were sold in the 12 months ending April 2009, it has been revealed.

The smart cards permit free travel on the city's transit systems and entry to attractions including the Royal Botanic Garden and National Museum of Flight.

In the future, it is thought this list may expand to include Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle, reports Edinburgh Evening News.

But the smart transit cards are already proving popular despite the absence of such names from the list of participants in the scheme.

Sinead Feltoe, regional director of the card's developer VisitScotland, tells the publication that the recent holiday season helped to boost the total.

"To have doubled sales over Easter is a sign that the pass is doing well," she says.

South of the Scottish border, the sQuidcard is also providing access to transit systems without the need to carry pockets full of change, with Bolton expected to add support for the contactless smart card to its buses soon.
