First phase of west-England transit card project set to start
11 Oct 2010
The first phase of a new bus transit card programme in the west of England is set to begin, according to reports.
Transport minister Norman Baker has revealed that a £2.2 million government grant to the West of England Partnership will help fund a transport data collection programme called HOPS.
The information will be used to help regional bus operators allocate payments and adjust their timetable and services to meet customer demand.
Following the HOPS programme, around 200 buses in the area will be fitted with smart card readers by March 2011.
The scheme will be limited to concessionary passengers during an initial trial period before being rolled out to all customers.
A spokeswoman told thisisbath.co.uk: "Users will still have to let the driver know where they want to go and will be issued a ticket as proof of payment, but it will remove the scrabbling about with cash for every journey.
"The cards will not have PIN numbers."
