French commuters to benefit from new ticket system
17 Sep 2009

Commuters in Ile-de-France are being provided with a service that makes travel more comfortable and less time-consuming.

Paris transport firm RATP, which operates a multi-mode transport system of buses, trains, trams and metro services, have chosen digital security group Gemalto to supply card readers that enable people to top up their tickets online at home.

Over the next six months a pilot scheme will take place in the region, which will see users connect the Gemalto PC Twin Reader to their computers and purchase what they need with just the click of a button.

Philippe Cambriel, executive vice-president of Gemalto's secure transactions business unit, said that the company was "proud" to help Ile-de-France's commuters.

He described the service as a "fast and convenient solution for topping up their travelcards whenever they like, from the comfort of their own homes".

In the UK, eCash network sQuidcard has started providing residents of Bolton, Greater Manchester with contactless smart cards that can be used to pay for bus travel in the region.
