Fujitsu to issue over one million contactless smart cards
21 Dec 2009

Leading information technology service provider Fujitsu is set to produce and distribute over one million new contactless smart cards in London.

The new Freedom passes combine Oyster and ITSO smart card technology and will include a photograph of the owner, which will eliminate the need for people to carry a separate photocard.

More than one million people over the age of 60 will be able to use the pass to receive free travel on buses, trains, the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway in the capital, as well as local bus routes around the country.

The passes have been paid for by London boroughs for over 20 years, but the new-style cards will have an added level of security and will be valid for a period of five years, three years longer than the current pass.

Fujitsu will issue one million blank Freedom passes, which will then be encoded and personalised for new or renewing customers.

People who use the pass say that it makes a big difference to their independence.
