Fumbling for change 'not good'
14 Dec 2009
People using the transit in San Francisco will now be able to pay for their journeys using a TransLink smart card.
Reporting the launch of the new technology in the Californian city, NBCBayArena.com says: "Change is good. Fumbling for change is not."
The initiative, which will see locals handed out free contactless smart cards that come with an embedded chip ready to be loaded with eCash, follows the emergence of similar projects around the world.
In the Greater Manchester town of Bolton in the UK, the local council has teamed up with regional transport organisations and eMoney network sQuidcard to launch the country's first ever ITSO-enabled multi-purse smart card.
Cardholders are able to pay for bus travel, local authority services and inexpensive items in local shops with the smart technology.
According to NBCBayArena.com, the San Francisco TransLink card can be used on the services provided by the AC Transit, BART, Muni and Caltrain transit agencies.
