Glasgow underground to get contactless smart cards
15 Apr 2011

A new Oyster-style contactless smart card is to be introduced in Glasgow.

The technology will be brought in to the city's underground system in 2013 in time for the Commonwealth Games the following year, the Scotsman reports.

Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT), which owns and operates the subway, is set to approve the changes tomorrow (April 15th).

It means passengers will be able to load their contactless smart card with credit and swipe it over a reader at the barriers before making their journey.

SPT chairman Jonathan Findlay described the technology as being secure and speedy.

"You only have to look at how successful London's Oyster card has been to see the real benefits of smartcard ticketing to passengers," he added.

Passengers will also be able to make small purchases for items like newspapers and snacks with their cards.

At the end of last month, SPT announced changes to its Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme which means the basic concessionary fare has increased to 80p for a single journey and £1.20 for a return.
