Half a million passengers using smart card travel in Mexico City
1 Oct 2010

More than 500,000 passengers are using contactless smart cards for daily smart card travel on the Metrobus in Mexico City.

That is according to ASK, the card provider behind the scheme, which is based in the Sophia Antipolis technology park in Nice, France.

According to Invest in Cote d'Azur, more than 6.5 million contactless smart cards have been provided by the company to Mexico since the scheme was launched in 2005.

In addition to this, some 750 ASK card readers have been installed along the two bus routes, which extend 20km around the capital of Mexico.

Jorge Leal, general manager of ASK Mexico, was quoted by the news provider as saying: "I'm very proud to have been involved, from the beginning, in the implementation of a modern fare collection system.

"Contactless technology and Metrobus contribute to sustainable development in Mexico City and help decrease the city’s pollution."

The system, which makes use of dedicated bus lanes, saw 372 buses in the city replaced.
