Improvements planned for north-east's transit network
7 Nov 2011

Improvements including a contactless payment system have been planned for the Metro system in the north-east of the UK.

According to Journal Live, new top-up machines will be rolled out as part of a £25 million initiative to make the ticketing system in north Tyneside more user-friendly.

There will also be new barriers and a smart card system similar to London's Oyster scheme, with commuters able to top up their eMoney while they travel or via the dedicated machines at various stations.

Councillor David Wood, chair of the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority, said: "It's what people have been asking for a long time."

Last month, the Competition Commission said that an Oyster Card-like scheme should be rolled out for buses across the UK, the Financial Times reported.

It said this would encourage more people to use public transport, as well as making prices more competitive for regular users.
