Indian cities in race to complete transit card projects
8 Nov 2010
Two Indian cities are currently racing to become the first in the country to complete transit card programmes.
Transport agencies in Bangalore and Pune are both currently overseeing the installation of contactless smartcard readers across their bus fleets.
Transport minister R Ashoka has told reporters at Indian news agency Sify that Bangalore's bus smartcard programme would be fully operational in the coming weeks.
Pune is set to launch its own contactless smartcard system on November 14th.
Should both projects prove to be successful, they could pave the way for a new Common Mobility Card (CMC) throughout the region.
The CMC would enable residents to travel on the all of the area's buses, trains, ferries and other public transportation systems with a single card.
Furthermore, the Indian federal government is planning to launch a national transit card on the country's trains as part of an overall upgrade of the rail network.
