Indian transit card programme to be trialled on buses
27 Sep 2010
A new transit card programme is set to be trialled on buses in India, according to reports.
Regional public transport agency Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) will pilot the scheme on bus services in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
National news website indianexpress.com has revealed that, should the pilot programme be successful, it could be rolled out throughout the country.
Dilip Band, PMPML chairman and managing director, announced that the project will be fully operational from November 14th.
He told the news provider: "The common mobility card is used in many developed countries. The union government also planned to roll it out in India and has selected Pune for its pilot run on buses."
Indian transport officials eventually aim to create a uniform cashless ticketing system across all bus and train services.
The National Urban Transport Policy aims to issue residents with a single transit card to pay for travel.
