Indian transit card scheme set to expand
19 May 2010

An Indian transit card scheme is set to be expanded to incorporate the monorail and subway networks, it has been revealed.

Contactless smart card holders in Mumbai will soon be able to seamlessly travel across the city on various different forms of transport, reports Indianexpress.com.

Currently, the city's transit card can only be used on Best buses and local trains, but the scheme's expansion will allow commuters to benefit from quick and secure cashless payments, in addition to shorter queuing times.

K Vijayalakshmi, additional chief Unified Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMMTA), praised the new project for simplifying travel in the city.

He told the website: "With the initial phases of Metro and monorail expected to be completed by mid-2011, a decision was taken to extend the use of smart card for these transport modes."

It is thought that the introduction of the cards could also lead to a reduction in fare prices, as customers will no longer have to buy a variety of different tickets to travel across the city.
