Integrated Dublin transit card scheme set to involve 20 firms
19 Oct 2010

The new integrated transit card scheme in Dublin which is due to be launched next year will involve around 20 different transport operators, it has been revealed.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has been developing an integrated ticketing system which would allow users to pay for different forms of transport with a single card since 2002.

Gerry Murphy, chief executive of the NTA, revealed that a number of private and public companies will be involved in the initiative.

He told the Sunday Business Post Online: "This is a really big project; we're talking about the allocation of revenue streams to 20 other operators, such as Veolla and Aircoach, outside the public sector, too."

It is being currently being tested by the Railway Procurement Agency and Dublin Bus, with the project set to be fully operational by Spring 2011.

Should the technology prove to be successful it may then be extended to other cities over the next few years.
