Integrated Indian transit card set to be launched
20 Oct 2010
Indian residents could soon be able to use a single transit card to pay for travel across the country, it has been revealed.
State-owned rail company Indian Railways has announced that it will expand the functions of its current smart card so that it would be compatible with all forms of transport in the country, reports NDTV.
The firm is piloting its Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) card, which is already used on the national railway network, on the Delhi metro system. Should this be successful, the scheme will be rolled out across the nation's transport network.
Madhav Pathak, managing director of the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the national IT arm of the Indian Railways, revealed the firms plans.
He told the news provider: "We understand the importance of making smart cards work across different modes of transport.
"In Delhi, the ATVM system is being introduced with the capability of multiple applications being supported, and CRIS is collaborating with the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation on this."
